Update on our successful pilot with Origin Energy

After a successful year of trials in South Australia, we have rolled out our pilot with Origin Energy nationally and have already onboarded 6 new customers, increasing our flexible load to 12MW with a further 10MW in the pipeline before the end of the year.

We would like to claim that it is the biggest automated demand flexibility product in the world backed by an energy supply company – offered directly to their customers.

Tempus Energy began this journey after being chosen as part of the 2017 Free Electrons cohort. Free Electrons is a global business accelerator co-founded by Origin and seven other global utilities. Since then the relationship has gone from strength to strength, with successful trials across south Australia now being extended nationally

The demand management trials that have taken place with Origin have seen air conditioning units running more efficiently and flexibly - using the Tempus technology to shift non time critical loads to moments when prices are lower. These trials have been the first of their kind at this scale with a large electricity retailer in Australia.

It has long been thought that high prices in energy markets correlate to high carbon spikes, Tempus has been conducting tests from the trials to prove that this is the case.  This example from 2nd August 2018 shows a clear link to between the two and confirms a reduction in cost is also a reduction in carbon.

The Tempus technology uses smart controls working with our machine learning (AI) to predict market prices and automatically adjust non time critical energy usage to cleaner & cheaper times. This demand-side management platform reduces costs and uses more renewable energy.

We have several high profile customers in Adelaide taking part in the trial which have demonstrated very positive results. These customers were able to use Tempus’ technology to create on average a 21% reduction in their carbon intensity.

The way the market in Australia works is an ideal setting for Tempus to pilot their technology due to the transparency in price. Origin Energy has been vital in helping us demonstrate the positives of demand flexibility, both in delivering tangible benefits to customers and help to balance the grid.

With the success in south Australia, more customers are now onboarding.  Origin is currently rolling out the trials across Australia, using Tempus technology to help their clients improve their energy efficiency and make significant carbon savings.
